Getting your house ready for the spring

Spring is finally here! Cleveland had a rough winter, so now it’s time to prepare your home for the warmer weather.

First, check for mossy areas around the house. These places are prone to falls and slips, particularly near decks, patios, and walkways. EHow Home recommends “mixing a solution of water and 10 to 20 percent bleach and scrub the area where the moss was. This should discourage it from growing back. If the stuff is on your deck, use a pressure washer to blast it away.”

We’re all about getting organized. Whether it’s that stack of newspapers and magazines, your winter clothing, broken or unused toys, or old documents, throw it away or give it away. While you’re going through your attic or basement, check for holes to ensure that critters haven’t made their way inside.

Are your windows looking a little dusty? Handyman Solutions suggests cleaning the inside and outside of your windows. We like to use a little combination of Windex and old newspapers to get all of that filth off. Now is also the time to replace your winter storm windows with screens. Let in all that fresh air!

Finally, take a look at your home’s brick surfaces. If they are cracked or deteriorating, it’s time to tuck point. Proper tuck pointing will seal the cracks and help prevent further damage to the foundation.
